Am Ufer des Tollense-Sees errichtete Freiherr von Hauff, ein Verwandter des Märchendichters Wilhelm Hauff, im 19. Jh. das Schloss und den Landschaftspark von Alt Rehse. Von 1935-41 nutzte das NS-Regime das Anwesen als „Führerschule der Deutschen Ärzteschaft“ zur ideologischen Ausbildung im Gesundheitswesen. Nach 1945 war hier u.a. ein Kinderdorf, dann eine Lehrerbildungsstätte, ab 1957 die Nationale Volksarmee und ab 1998 die Bundeswehr. Nach jahrelangem Leerstand belebt seit 2006 eine Gemeinschaft mit heute 30 Erwachsenen und zehn Kindern den Park. Sie führen einen Gäste- und Seminarbetrieb, organisieren kulturelle Veranstaltungen, es gibt biologischen Garten- und Ackerbau zur Selbstversorgung, einen Dorfladen, zwei Cafés, Handwerkszentrum, Museum, historische Sporthalle, Sportstadion, Bogenschießen, mehrere Strände, Paddel- und Segelboote, Kanus, Surfbretter etc.

The lake district of Mecklenburg, halfway between Berlin and the Baltic Sea, is one of Germany’s most beautiful areas. In the 19th century, Earl Ludwig Freiherr von Hauff, relative of the famous fairytale author Wilhelm Hauff, built the castle and the landscaped park in Alt Rehse at the banks of the Tollense Lake. In 1935, the Nazi regime established the National School of Physicians by constructing a number of guest and seminar houses, a gym and a sports field. From 1936 to 1942, about 10,000 doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and scientists were ideologically trained in what the Nazis called “national health and racial hygiene”. After World War II, the German Democratic Republic used the park consecutively as an orphanage, a training college for teachers and as army baracks. After the German reunification in 1990, the park was used and renovated by the German army. They left in 1998 and then the park stayed abandoned. In 2006, the park was sold to the initiators of Tollense Lebenspark and reopened - after having been closed to the public for more than 70 years. Today, some 30 adults and 10 children live there in an independent open-minded community, free of any political or religious dogma. Their main concerns are new economical methods, concentrated more on labor and substance than money, alternative health care, sports, culture, spirituality, and community life. They practice organic gardening and agriculture, organise cultural events and run several guest-houses, used for seminars and by individual tourists. This place is very beautiful with a lot of forest and several beaches on the shores of the big lake Tollense-See, sports facilities, boats, archery etc.. This is an interesting place to study new complementary approaches in coming society.

W:    Re-establishishing the original park near the lake, taking care of
the needs of ecology and green tourism; there will be also indoor work such as helping out in the kitchen and restoring the community houses in the park area according to traditional and modern craftmenship

A:    Guest house, 4-6 beds per room; please bring your own sleeping bag
Q:    Team work and physical labour required; philosophical discussions
are also welcome. Be prepared to represent your own country and culture.
F:    Three delicious organic, mainly vegetarian meals a day together with
inhabitants.
You will be expected to help sometimes also in the kitchen.
X:    Excursions to historical sites; optional: excursion to Berlin (130
kilometers).
